We Honor Veterans is a program developed by the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization in collaboration with the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The nation is seeing many of the veterans who served in World War II and Korea pass away and the number of deaths of Vietnam Veterans is beginning to rise. By recognizing the unique needs of our nation’s veterans who are facing a life-limiting illness, we are able to guide veterans and their families toward a more peaceful ending. In some cases, there may be specific needs related to their service, combat experience or other traumatic events that we are able to support.

The focus is on respectful inquiry, compassionate listening and grateful acknowledgment. America’s veterans have proudly served their country; we now step up and fulfill our mission of serving these men and women with the level of dignity they deserve.

Why are veteran volunteers important?

Volunteers are essential to the delivery of quality hospice care.
Veterans are a part of a distinct culture, sharing a common language, experiences, code of conduct and honor.
When veterans interact, their common language and experience can form a strong relational bond.
The camaraderie created between veterans has proven to be supportive for all involved.

What activities can veteran volunteers do?

Visit veterans in their homes, nursing facilities or hospital
Assist veterans in reminiscing/telling life stories
Take part in pinning ceremonies
Assist with the distribution of veteran recognition items

Volunteer opportunities are available in Lynchburg, Bedford, Farmville and surrounding communities. All hospice volunteers receive eight hours of training as well as ongoing support and continuing education opportunities.
